Attempted Hanging of a British Hostage – Apr 1947

Date: 24/04/1947

Location: Tel Aviv-Jaffa

Perpetrators: Irgun

Victims: Failed attack

What Happened?

24 March 1947: A group of Jewish British Police officers, secretly working with the banned outfit Irgun, roamed the streets of Tel Aviv-Jaffa to find a British hostage to hang and murder. Armed with submachine guns and pistols, they found an Englishman in the bar of the Park Hotel and took him hostage.

The hostage, M. M. Collins, was driven into an orange grove, and a hangman’s noose was presented to him. Collins was allowed to live after proving his Jewish identity. The week before, British police had stopped another Irgun attempt to find and hang a British person.

Earlier, Lehi had bombed a military-civilian train and a military convoy as a response to the death sentences of convicted Zionist terrorists.
