What Happened?
31 March 1947: Lehi (Stern Gang), a terror outfit banned by the British Government, exploded and detonated two bombs inside the Haifa Refinery, located close to the Haifa port. The explosions caused cascading fires that engulfed much of the refinery and the storage tanks. The city experienced a temporary blackout.
The explosion and fire destroyed at least eight full petroleum tanks, ranging from 1,000 to 4,000 tons. The fires continued to burn for 18 days, casting Haifa’s sky in smoke and flames. Historical footage of this terror attack can be seen on the British Pathe website.
