Barclays Bank Building Bombing – Mar 1946

What Happened?

1st March 1946: An explosion happened on the 3rd floor of the Barclays Bank building in Kingsway, Haifa. The blast fatally injured 2 people, and four were wounded. The floor contained offices of the Haifa Shipping Agency, the Movements Office for Haifa Port, and the Army Area Cashier’s office. Another explosion occurred in a nearby car park, where eyewitnesses had seen armed men in uniform earlier (the Irgun & Lehi were infamous for using British Army uniforms).

In a separate nearby attack, a British Army jeep was blown up by a mine that killed 2 soldiers. The explosion led to a fire that destroyed nearby trees. These bombings happened along a series of coordinated terror attacks across Palestine on 1st March 1946.
