Goldschmidth House Bombing – Mar 1946
Date: 01/03/1946
Location: Al-Quds (Jerusalem)
Perpetrators: Irgun
Victims: 20 dead, 30+ wounded
What Happened?
Militants of the Irgun Zvai Leumi used a Bren light machine gun on King George Avenue (a high-security zone) in Jerusalem, opposite the Yeshuron Synagogue. The indiscriminate firing was a distraction to lure the local police’s attention away from an explosive-laden lorry that rammed through barricades and was driven up outside the Goldschmidt House, a club for British Officers. Irgun militants threw satchel bombs into the club rooms and windows. 20 people were reported dead, with many more wounded.
This bombing is historically interesting because it coincided with a ‘wave’ of coordinated terror attacks by the Irgun Zvai Leumi, with some sources claiming up to 16 major operations on the 1st of March, 1946 alone.
