Failed Preparations to Hang British Soldiers – Apr 1947
Date: 21/03/1947
Location: Tel Aviv-Jaffa
Perpetrators: Irgun / Lehi
Victims: Failed attack
What Happened?
21 April 1947: The local police found two ropes tied into nooses, two grenades, a flash bomb, printing dies to forge civilian identities, 30 rounds of ammunition, grenade-training instruction manuals, and two detonators. Three arrests were made in connection with this discovery.
This ‘failed’ attack can be seen as a precursor to Irgun’s well-known desire to hang British soldiers as a response to the hanging of convicted Zionist terrorists earlier, which they accomplished a few months later.
This attack followed deadly raids, grenade attacks, and mine ambushes by the Irgun a few days earlier. This attack was also a response to the grenade-suicide of convicted Israeli terrorists (Moshe Barazani and Meir Feinstein) who were due to be hanged in the morning.
Other attacks on this day by Irgun include the Nebi Samuel Grenade attack and Ramle-Aqil Failed Mine Ambush.
