What Happened?

19 December 1947: A Haganah raiding group (retaliating for the killing of a settler) attacked the Palestinian village of Qazaza in the Ramle district. The Palestinian newspaper Filastin reported that the villagers fought back with gunfire, with two ultimately being killed by the Haganah and several others wounded.

The home of the Mukhtar (village chief) was also partially destroyed.

By 1948, the village had been ethnically cleansed of all Palestinian Arabs, as had the surrounding villages of Kheima, Jilya, Idnibba, and Mughallis. Many of the residents of Qazaza fled to Hebron during the 1948 Nakba.
