Na’aman River Bridge Bombing – May 1947

Date: 04/05/1947

Location: Haifa

Perpetrators: Irgun or Lehi

Victims: Civilian infrastructure

What Happened?

04 May 1947: The Na’maan River bridge was blown up by militants of either Irgun or Lehi, as part of their joint raid on Acre prison to free convicted terrorists and criminals. The exploded bridge disrupted the movement of civilians and law enforcement, forcing passengers of the local buses to spend the night on the road.

The British military kept the children in the buses safe by escorting them to a military camp in Kiriat Haim. A large explosive device was found planted in a schoolchildren’s sports ground earlier.
