Shawal (N. Waziristan) Drone Attack II – Jun 2011

Date: 27/06/2011

Location: North Waziristan Agency, FATA, Pakistan

Perpetrators: United States

Victims: 12 Killed

What Happened?

27 June 2011: A U.S. drone strike destroyed one or two ‘trucks’ in the Shawal, reportedly two kilometers from the Afghanistan border. Media sources vary in their casualty count, with up to 12 people reported dead. Three of the dead were reported as ‘foreigners’ while five were described as local ‘suspected militants’.

Anonymous sources alleged the death of TTP’s Shakirullah Shakir, a high-level commander responsible for the group’s Fidayeen e Islami faction. However, this claim cannot be considered credible as Shakir was reportedly shot three weeks earlier, likely as a result of internal strife between TTP. The casualties are therefore unclear.

No independent inquiry has ever been made to learn of the victims in this drone strike. Data published by FATA Secretariat in Peshawar years later makes no mention of this attack, leaving it completely undocumented by the Pakistani state.
