What Happened?

26 April 1947: A taxi carrying Irgun assassins drove past the cab of Haifa’s CID (Criminal Investigation Department) Chief, Mr. A.E. Conquest, outside the Appinger Hotel in Carmel Avenue. The assassins shot at Mr. Conquest, who stood outside the cab, hitting him twice in the abdomen.

A police officer accompanying the CID Chief opened fire on the fleeing taxi, forcing it to crash. However, the attackers managed to escape.

Two days earlier, a land mine was planted by Lehi that killed and injured multiple policemen in Sarona.
