Citrus House Bombing – Mar 1947

Date: 09/03/1947

Location: Beit Hadar, Tel Aviv

Perpetrators: Irgun

Victims: Unknown

What Happened?

On 9 March 1947, three heavy explosions occurred near Citrus House (present-day Beit Hadar) in Tel Aviv. Citrus House housed a British Army Headquarters. Armed Irgun militants shot at British positions, causing extensive damage to critical public infrastructure, including power lines that plunged the city into darkness.

Irgun militants heavily mined the roads leading to the HQ. The mines destroyed several police and military cars rushing to restore public order. British soldiers were also attacked by mortar fire. A fire also broke out, leading to the death of an elderly Jewish woman (Mrs. Martel Meyer), who was escaping the violence.

This bombing was one of the three simultaneous major attacks by Irgun on 9 March 1947.
