In November 2023, Israel sent a shipping container filled with 111 unidentified bodies to Khan Younis, in the early days of the genocide. Four months later, another container was sent to Gaza that contained 80 unidentified bodies.
Skip to August 2024, health authorities in Gaza received another ‘shipment‘ of 80 dead Gazan bodies from Israel. A few weeks later in September, another container of unidentified 88 Gazan bodies was sent by Israel. Nobody knows who these dead people were, from where they were abducted, and how they were killed and/or processed.

Nobody in the West would have stayed quiet had Hamas been in the business of casually delivering shipping containers filled with Israeli corpses, but here we are. Rumours that these bodies were missing organs have continued to grow.
Thousands of Gazan corpses are detained in Israel’s Sde Teiman detention centre, or held in the infamous ‘numbers‘ graveyard, with no identification or due process. In 2017, a video went viral on social media where Palestinians smuggled a body out of a hospital to save it from indefinite seizure by Israel.
Local authorities in Gaza have been making the case that Israel is harvesting organs from Palestinian bodies. Other independent organisations have claimed the same. When the IDF withdrew from South Gaza in April 2024, local services found mass graves of 392 bodies including children, showing signs of torture and being buried alive.

Nobody knows what the Israeli military did to these people, in a horrifying dark zone where contact with the outside world was impossible. Israel does not ascribe to the Fourth Geneva Convention of 1949, which prohibits looting and mutilation of dead bodies.
A Global Market for Organs
There is an entire verifiable history of Palestinian organs being harvested by Israel. A Swedish newspaper learned that Israel harvested organs from Palestinians (among other groups) without permission from their families during the 90s, going far as to glue eyelids shut to hide the theft of corneas.
Israeli anthropologist Meira Weiss published a book in 2002, ‘Over Their Dead Bodies’ that gave details of Palestinian organ harvesting. Israel also boasts the world’s largest skin bank, exceeding 17 square meters of human skin – a staggering accomplishment for a tiny country, where only 10% of the population has signed up to become organ donors.

In 2007, an Israeli transplant surgeon was arrested in Turkiye for suspicion of transplanting trafficked organs. The same surgeon was suspended from surgeries in Israel in 1996 for his involvement in human organ trafficking.
In 2012, the Times of Israel reported on the bust of an illegal organ trade ring within Israel. However, the paper conveniently leaves out who the perpetrators were, where they operated, and who they targeted in a head-scratching report that raises more questions than it answers. Israel doesn’t even acknowledge what foreign countries complained about this organ trading ring.

In 2015, a report presented by the European Parliament identified Israel at the helm of a growing black market for human organs. Over the past decade, there have been numerous high-profile busts of Israeli organ trafficking networks. One was busted in 2024 in Turkiye, another was busted in 2018 in Cyprus.
There’s little information on the global illegal human organ trade (which makes sense). It is a shady industry, but one that Israel’s government and society have fostered.
What Israeli research says
From 2009 to 2014, a researcher from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Zvika Orr, interviewed organ brokers, vendors, doctors, lawyers, and recipients within Israel, to study Israel’s socio-cultural response to organ trafficking. The study found that Israelis have a tolerant attitude towards the buying and selling of organs, even noting how illegal organ brokers operate freely with no restrictions (long after the ban in 2008).

In 2022, a study published in the International Journal of Human Rights found that many Israeli doctors and surgeons keep an open view on organ trafficking, preferring to turn a ‘blind eye’ to patients who wanted or secured illegally trafficked human organs.
As the dust of the Gaza genocide settles (if at all, since Israel has recently blocked all aid into Gaza once again), we are likely to hear more tales and concrete evidence on whether Israeli actors have taken and sold organs from Palestinians.
Israel has already amassed the world’s largest skin bank (which deserves an explanation on the ‘donors’) and keeps unidentified Palestinian corpses at scale.
