What Happened?

14 June 2008: 3 U.S. drone-based hellfire missiles struck a house in the Makin area of South Waziristan Agency. The CIA claimed the intended target to be Baituallah Mehsud. Mehsud was not killed in this attack.

A document issued by the FATA Secretariat in Islamabad reported that an innocent civilian had been killed in this attack instead. According to one CIA official Matthew Aid, the U.S. had warned Islamabad beforehand about the attack happened, and subsequently blamed Pakistan for hiding Baitullah Mehsud when the attack failed. It is notable that Pakistan was actively fighting Mehsud’s Tehreek Taliban Pakistan militant group at that time.
