Date: 04/06/2012

Location: North Waziristan Agency, FATA, Pakistan

Perpetrators: United States

Victims: 18 Killed, 6 Injured

What Happened?

04 June 2012: A U.S. drone strike destroyed a house on the boundary between Khushali and Hassu Khel in Mirali. The attack started at around 0400 hours and created a mass-casualty event that killed several civilians. TBIJ collected some testimony alleging that the first wave of missiles destroyed a car and some motorcycles, killing some 4-6 people.

The second wave of missiles struck rescuers who arrived at the scene to dig through the rubble. The CIA deliberately attacked the rescuers, reportedly killing 10-12 people. Their identities have never been independently verified on if whether these casualties were militants or civilians. A report by Amnesty International in 2013 suggested that at least 6 of the people killed were civilians.

A September 2012 Associated Press report alleged that a Saudi national, Najam, lost both of his legs in this attack. Najam, a wealthy individual, requested leniency from the Saudi government and was allowed to return home to his family.

This attack killed the Libyan-born Al Qaeda commander Yahya al Libi. The CIA had been actively hunting al Libi for the past two weeks. Three preceding U.S. drone strikes killed at least 26 people, at least 10 of whom were civilians, while the other 16 are undocumented. A further 18 people were injured.

Al Qaeda’s senior leader, Ayman Al Zawahiri confirmed al Libi’s death in September 2012. In 2006, the CIA had destroyed a school in Pakistan’s Bajaur Agency in a bid to kill Al Zawahiri, where he was not present, killing 80+ children.
