Zari Noor (S. Waziristan) Drone Strike – Aug 2008

Date: 20/08/2008

Location: South Waziristan, FATA, Pakistan

Perpetrators: United States

Victims: 12 Killed, 5 Injured

What Happened?

20 August 2008: Multiple U.S. drone missiles struck a house in the Zari Noor area of Wana in South Waziristan. The house reportedly belonged to Haji Yaqub Wazir, a known mediator between the Taliban factions and the Pakistani’s army.

A document released by FATA Secretariat in Islamabad placed the death toll at 6, alleging the victims to have been locals. CIA placed the death toll at 12.

CIA alleged that the attack had killed Al Qaeda and Haqqani Network militants. However, no independent verification of the victims is available. Because the attack targeted a house, children could have been possible casualties.

In 2017, the U.S. also assassinated another mediator, Qari Abdullah in Pakistan’s Kurram Agency, who had helped secure the release of captured U.S. Army soldier Bowe Bergdahl from Haqqani Network captivity.
