Gurwek (N. Waziristan) Massacre II – Jul 2011
Date: 11/07/2011
Location: North Waziristan Agency, FATA, Pakistan
Perpetrators: United States
Victims: 25 Killed, 15 Injured
What Happened?
11 July 2011: A U.S. drone strike destroyed a van and house in the Gurwek area of Datta Khel Tehsil. This attack reportedly occurred first at around 2015 hours for the van, and 0300 hours for the house. This created a high-casualty event where roughly 25+ are reported to have been killed, and 15+ injured.
No credible information has ever come forward about the nature of the casualties. Pakistani security officials could not ascertain if the dead were militants or civilians. AFP reported all of the dead as ‘militants’, even before the full death toll had been reported.
The last time that Gurwek had been targeted was in 2008, where another U.S. drone strike had killed 12 people, at least 7 of whom were women and children.
