What Happened?

28 July 2008: A U.S. drone attack targeted the home of Abu Khabab in the Zyara Leta area of Azam Warsak in South Waziristan Agency.

The CIA alleged that the attack had killed top Al-Qaeda figures including: Abu Khabab al-Misri, Abu Mohammad Ibrahim bin Abi Al Faraj al-Misri, Abdul Wahab al-Misri and Abu Islam al-Misri.

However, the attack also had a large collateral damage. Al-Qaeda officials reported that several innocent children of a nearby school had been killed in this attack, including at least 3 children and 2 women from Abu Khabab’s own family.

According to a now-lost report from the Washington Post, CIA officials presented a secret apology to the Pakistani Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani for the women and children killed in this attack.

Data compiled by the FATA Secretariat in Islamabad placed the death toll at 7 civilians, reporting them all to be non-locals.
