Zakar Khel (N. Waziristan) Drone Attack – May 2012

Date: 28/05/2012

Location: North Waziristan Agency, FATA, Pakistan

Perpetrators: United States

Victims: 7 Killed

What Happened?

28 May 2012: A U.S. drone strike destroyed a moving pick-up truck close to the Zakar Khel area in Mirali. The first missile was fired at 0015 hours and apparently missed its target. The second missile successfully destroyed the truck. Media sources report varying death count, ranging from 2 to 7.

No other information is available about this U.S. drone strike. The identities of the victims were never verified, nor was their civilian status. It was commonly observed that Hellfire missiles on cars often led to completely charred and unidentifiable bodies.

Data published by FATA officials years later reports that a Pakistani state car was destroyed, creating a substantial risk of undocumented civilian casualties.

This is one of the least documented and most obscure U.S. drone attacks in the region.
