Date: 16/05/2011
Location: North Waziristan Agency, FATA, Pakistan
Perpetrators: United States
Victims: 10 Killed, 2 Injured
What Happened?
16 May 2011: A U.S. drone strike destroyed a house in the Umarkai area of Mirali. This attack reportedly occurred at 2045 hours. The Chinese news agency, Xinhua, alleged this attack to be on a ‘militant school’. Other sources alleged that this attack had killed a local Al Qaeda commander Moulana Bashir, Commander Haleem and another local operative Abu Kashif. These claims were rejected by the group.
Data released years later by FATA Secretariat in Peshawar places the death count for this drone attack at four, two of whom were reportedly militants. No other independent inquiry has taken place since to confirm their identities.
This attack was conducted without permission of the Pakistani state, as the Secretary of State John Kerry later received ‘angry’ messages from COAS Kayani and President Zaradari in the aftermath.
