What Happened?
15 January 2015: A U.S. drone strike destroyed a house in an unknown area of Shawal Valley. The timing of this attack is also unknown. Media reports indicate that up to 7 people were killed.
It was later learned that this strike had killed two Western hostages. The 37-year-old year Italian aid worker Giovanni Lo Porto and American Dr Warren Weinstein were among the fatalities of this attack. An American citizen who was apparently a member of Al Qaeda, Ahmed Farouq, was also among the dead.
Despite demands and protests by the Italian government, the United States refused to cooperate in any investigation into Lo Porto’s death.
