Shawal (N. Waziristan) Drone Attack III – Nov 2011

Date: 17/11/2011

Location: North Waziristan Agency, FATA, Pakistan

Perpetrators: United States

Victims: 9 Killed, 5 Injured

What Happened?

17 November 2011: A U.S. drone strike destroyed a house in the Shawal Valley, although the precise location is unknown. This attack is reported to have occurred at around 1615 hours. Media reports suggest that up to 9 people were killed and up to 5 were left injured.

A local news agency, The News, cited unnamed security officials claiming that all casualties were militants. However, the agency notes that it was not possible to independently confirm the identities of the victims, as their bodies were charred beyond any recognition. A British news agency, Channel 4, alleged that the victims included British citizens Ibrahim Adam and Mohammed Azmir Khan, claiming that both were linked to Al-Qaeda.

Another British news agency, The Independent, contradicted Channel 4’s claim and alleged that it was more likely the two men had been killed in the preceding months.

Data published years later by FATA Secretariat in Peshawar also contradicts all these accounts, instead alleging that this attack had killed 7 ‘locals’ – including a TTP commander Noor Wali of Khadar Khel.
