Naurak (N. Waziristan) Drone Attack V – Aug 2011

Date: 22/08/2011

Location: North Waziristan Agency, FATA, Pakistan

Perpetrators: United States

Victims: 7 Killed

What Happened?

22 August 2011: A U.S. drone strike destroyed a house and car in the Mir Khon Khel village of Naurak in Mirali. This attack reportedly occurred at around 2030 hours. The house belonged to a local Gul Sawab. Media reports speculated that up to 7 or more people had been killed, including ‘family’ and ‘suspected militants’.

Later allegations came forward that Al-Qaeda’s second-in-command Atiyah abd Al-Rehman had been killed, possibly along with his family. This claim could not be confirmed by Pakistani security officials. While this drone attack was logged in FATA official records, there is no mention of Al-Rehman’s death. Instead, FATA records allege that a Pakistani state car was destroyed.

The Nation, a local news agency, alleged that Al-Rahman was actually killed in a separate, undocumented drone attack shortly later in the nearby town of Khaisori. No information is available about the identities of the casualties in this attack.
