New Adda (N. Waziristan) Drone Attack III – Mar 2013
Date: 21/03/2013
Location: North Waziristan Agency, FATA, Pakistan
Perpetrators: United States
Victims: 4 Killed, 1 Injured
What Happened?
21 March 2013: A U.S. drone strike destroyed either a house or moving car in the Nawey Adda area of Datta Khel Tehsil. This attack reportedly occurred at around 2330 hours. Western and local media accounts contradict strongly on what happened.
New York Times and Associated Press allege that a car was destroyed as it moved through a bazaar at late night, which was remarked as an ‘unusual time’ for a car to travel. This creates the concern that this attack was a ‘signature strike’ – based on observed behaviour and guesswork, as opposed to actual intelligence.
Local newspapers and Chinese Xinhua instead report that a house was destroyed entirely, and that locals rushed out of their homes to begin the rescue work. It was alleged that at least four people were killed and there were some injures. The identities of these victims was never confirmed, leaving a strong possibility of civilian casualties.
