Date: 29/04/2012
Location: North Waziristan Agency, FATA, Pakistan
Perpetrators: United States
Victims: 4 Killed, 3 Injured
What Happened?
29 April 2012: A U.S. drone strike destroyed an old girls’ school in the Miranshah Bazar area. This attack reportedly began at around 1645 hours. Media reports alleged that up to 6 ‘suspected militants’ were killed. An anonymous Pakistani security official told Reuters that state forces intercepted militants’ radio chatter to learn they lost four men.
Media reports contradict each other on the nationality of the militants – Reuters reported them to be Arabs, Dawn alleged that they were Punjabi, New York Times alleged them Haqqani Network locals, while Associated Press alleged they were Uzbek and Tajik.
In August 2012, the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan confirmed that its leader Usman Atil was killed in this drone strike. Atil had replaced Tahir Yuldashev, who had been injured in an August 2009 drone attack in South Waziristan, and passed a while later in Zhob, Balochistan.
