What Happened?
14 August 2010: A U.S. drone strike destroyed what is likely a mosque where a communal prayer was being held, in the Issori area of Mirali. A nearby house was also destroyed by a separate missile. It is unknown how many people were killed or injured in the house.
An investigation done years later by the Associated Press found that a group of militants, presumably the Taliban, had joined the communal prayer when the missiles struck. This raises the possibility that the CIA was fully aware of the civilian presence in the mosque. The AP report insists on calling the destroyed building a ‘compound’, as opposed to a place of community worship.
Another U.S. drone massacre of potentially 25+ civilians took place in this area in October 2008.
