What Happened?
07 January 2013: A U.S. drone strike destroyed a house in the Haider Khel area of Mirali. This attack reportedly began at around 0010 hours. Up to eight missiles were fired on the home in succession. Media reports alleged that Al-Qaeda’s Sheikh Yaseen Al-Kuwaiti was killed in this attack, alongside his wife and daughter.
U.S. Intelligence alleged Al-Kuwaiti to be a top-level Al Qaeda commander, responsible for overseeing the Lashkar al-Zil group. This allegation can be corroborated by the fact that Lashkar al-Zil has been inactive since this U.S. drone strike.
All other casualties in this U.S. drone strike are unknown. There is a high risk of civilian casualties as this attack happened in a residential area.
This is the first attack on Mirali Tehsil on this day. The second attack happened minutes later in the nearby area of Hassu Khel.
