Ganki Khel (S. Waziristan) Drone Attack V – Jun 2009

Date: 19/06/2009

Location: South Waziristan Agency, FATA, Pakistan

Perpetrators: United States

Victims: 18 Killed, 10 Injured

What Happened?

19 June 2009: A mass-casualty event took place after five U.S. drone missiles struck the town of Ganki Khel outside Wana in South Waziristan Agency. The CIA alleged that it had targeted the house of a Taliban commander and had killed multiple militants including Uzbekis and Turkmens, which was later corroborated by a FATA document released years later.

However, it is alleged that at least four civilians were also killed, who were later named Liaquat, Daraz, Sabil, and Jahanzaib. A public protest took place in Wana the next day against this attack, raising the possibility of undocumented civilian deaths. More independent confirmation is lacking for this attack.

This was the fifth U.S. drone attack on Ganki Khel in two years.
